Beautiful Mevagissey Harbour

Discover Mevagissey

Mevagissey is a fabulous year-round destination, one of the few remaining working fishing villages in Cornwall with its many narrow cobbled streets, quaint cottages and a range of shops, pubs and restaurants.

Named after two Irish saints, St Meva and St Issey, the village dates back to at least 1313 and during the 1800s Mevagissey prospered on the back of the abundant source of pilchards out to sea.

Old Mevagissey

Narrow streets and steep valley sides lead down to the centre of the old Mevagissey where the distinctive twin harbour provides a safe haven for the many fishing boats that land their daily catch of mackerel, lobster, plaice and sole. In typical picture postcard style, pubs, cafes, galleries and shops cluster around the harbour walls and line the pretty streets.

The harbour is the centre of village life in Mevagissey. Fishing boats deliver their catch year-round, whilst during the main summer months fishermen offer leisurely 30 minute cruises of the bay. Anglers can either join a charter boat for offshore fishing or simply cast a line off Lighthouse Quay.

Mevagissey Museum and Aquarium are located directly on the harbour, though opening times are seasonal. Free entry, donations gratefully accepted.

In winter, Mevagissey becomes a lively weekend destination famous for its array of cosy pubs offering not only drinks, but fresh, locally sourced-food and, often, live music. Numerous pubs and cafes offer dining options, including breakfast.

For walkers, the South West Coast Path cuts through the village linking to Charlestown and beyond to the north, and Gorran Haven to the south.

Further afield, Mevagissey is ideally situated for visits to gorgeous Cornish beaches as well as the enchanting Lost Gardens of Heligan (10 minutes by car), The Eden Project (20 minutes) and Wheal Martyn (25 minutes) for a taste of Cornwall’s mining heritage.
